Hoe dit model kan worden gebruikt:
Om onder- of overvoeding te voorkomen, dient de calorische intake te worden afgestemd op de energiebehoefte van de individuele patiënt. Het gebruik van formules om de individuele energiebehoefte te schatten heeft daarmee de voorkeur boven het aanhouden van een vaste calorische intake (bijvoorbeeld 30 kcol/kg) per patiënt. 

Modelprestaties:
In een retrospectieve validatie studie verricht tussen juli 2002 en april 2005 door Weijs et al., werden 18 verschillende formules voor het berekenen van het basaalmetabolisme geëvalueerd. In totaal werden 48 polikliinische en 45 klinische patiënten geïncludeerd voor wie indirecte calorimetrische data beschikbaar was. Daarnaast werd een subgroep van 42 patiënten met ondergewicht BMI < 18.5 kg/m2) geanalyseerd. Van alle geëvalueerde formules, gaf de FAO/UNU/WHO vergelijking de beste schatting met een afwijking van 182, 277 en 219 kcal/dag voor respectievelijk poliklinische, klinische patiënten en patiënten met ondergewicht. Goede alternatieven bleken de Mifflin formules (met name voor patiënten met ondergewicht) en de gereviseerde Harris & Bennedict formule.
