Background information: 
The creatinine clearance is a widely used test to estimate the glomerular filtration rate (GFR).1 Creatinine is derived from the metabolism of creatine in skeletal muscle and from dietary meat. It is released into the circulation at a relatively constant rate and has a stable plasma concentration. 

Evaluation of the creatinine clearance: 
Creatinine clearance is usually determined from a 24-hour urine collection. Shorter collections tend to give less accurate results. One problem with shorter timed collections is that any retained urine would represent a larger percent of the total urine collection. In addition, creatinine excretion varies throughout the day.2

Reference values: 
Typical creatinine clearance for healthy adults is 80 - 120 mL/min.
